Glo Overtakes Expresso in Mobile Subscribers

Recently launched Glo Mobile has become Ghana’s 5th largest telecoms company in terms of subscriber base after latest National Communication Authority (NCA) statistics showed that the company overtook Expresso, Ghana’s struggling CDMA network operator.

The latest mobile subscriber base statistics show that Glo has 468,508 subscribers base, representing 2 per cent of the total market share, while Expresso dropped its subscriber base from 204,423 between April 2012 and May 2012.

Expresso’s 195,670, represents a paltry 1 per cent of total mobile subscriber base in the country.

The figures show that Glo Mobile boosted its subscribers to over 468, 500 subscribers in just one month of launching its operations.

Glo launched its commercial operations on April 29, 2012 after a protracted delay compelled the NCA to fine the company US$200,000.

Meanwhile, the NCA last week announced that Glo had fully paid the sanctions imposed on the company for failing to meet its network roll-out obligations.

Glo breached the license condition by failing to roll-out its network for over three years since the license was issued. The Authority therefore imposed the applicable penalty of US$200,000.00 which has since been settled in full by the company.
